Modelling of tool temperature and thermal effects in environmental dry cutting conditions

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
The main objective is to model the thermal effect and cutting tool temperature under dry cutting conditions that fulfil environmental requirements. The numerical approach shall be based on analytical and finite element models.
Work content: The Swedish Institute for Metals Research (SIMR) is active in developing applications for manufacturing products in conditions that satisfy environmental specifications. In the field of machining the introduction of dry cutting is a promising alternative to more conventional processes where the use of cutting fluids is still widely employed. However, in environmental dry cutting operations, temperature and tool wear are critical parameters that should be considered and investigated carefully. In the present work, Infrared image monitoring system (CCD camera, software and PC based acquisition system) has been used successfully to investigate cutting tool temperature in dry turning conditions.
It is proposed now to compare such experimental technique to analytical and finite element models that could simulate the thermal effects during the cutting process. These models will require the input of experimental data and parameters that will be obtained through standard turning tests.
Participating companies Seco Tools, Sandvik Steel, Sandvik Coromant and Ovako Steel.
