Computed Aided Detection of temporal changes in mammography

Mammography screening is state-of-the-art in the fight for breast cancer. Over 100 million mammographic examinations are reviewed by radiologist per year. Nevertheless the sensitivity can be improved; 10-30% of the cancers are missed. When reviewing the images of a screening examination it is standard procedure to compare to the woman’s previous screening examination to see what type of changes that have occurred. Computer aided detection (CAD) is today used as an adjunct or aid to the radiologist in finding so called microcalcifications, an early indicator for some types of breast cancer. However, the majority of the deaths (95%) are caused by cancers that are not indicated by microcalcifications. We want to explore the possibility to use CAD of temporal changes between mammographic images.
This candidate level thesis encompasses developing a (Matlab) program that does geometrical matching (rigid and deformed) of mammographic images (acquired with same system or different). A temporal subtraction of the matched images is then performed to find candidates for cancers.
