Mixing for enhanced biogas production

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
The Biogas process is using renewable resources to produce the energy rich gas methane that can be used for energy production or as vehicle fuel. Within the BioGasOpt-project a number of optimizations and capacity increasing improvements will be studied. One part of the project is to study the mixing inside a digester/ fermentor to increase the yield of gas.

Fermentation of organic residues for production of biogas is a biological process that relies on a good environment for the microorganisms that drives the process. Two Important factors in their environment are pH and temperature which has been studied intensely and is well described in literature. Another important factor is the mixing inside the digester/fermentor to make sure that we have an even temperature inside the digester, that the nutrient transport is taken care of and that the organic material does not sedimentate on the bottom of the tank. Researchers stress the fact that the mixing is very important and that too much mixing and too little might cause problems in the process. The problem is that there is not much information to find in literature about how to design the mixing and how much mixing that is really needed to get a good process going.

This thesis work is about studying the mixing and its affect on the biogas production. By starting up batch experiments that are subjected to different kinds of mixing at different intensities we can get valuable information about the gas production at these mixing regimes.
