NoSQL Database for Software Project Data

Background
Large software projects produce huge amounts of data that correlate in many ways. Traditional SQL RDBMS (Structured Query Language – Relational Database Management System) is hard to scale to the sheer amount of data and how it connects internally. One way to address this problem is usage of a NoSQL database.
Theoretical Objective
Evaluate the usage of an appropriate NoSQL database for project data storage. The evaluation will be done against a SQL RDBMS and the main focus will be in operation efficiency and implementation/usage complexity.
Practical Objective
Creating a production grade NoSQL database backed system for a limited part of an already existing solution that is based on an SQL RDBMS. The system must run on Linux and the suggestion is that the implementation is performed in Java. A basic web presentation is desirable if there is enough time.
