Cost-effective maintenance of wind power systems
The wind power industry has undergone a strong expansion over the past years. The growth mainly focused on an increasing market, improved economical conditions and the development of large wind turbines and offshore wind farms. However, the present cost of maintenance required to ensure the technical availability of wind power systems is high and there is thus a strong need for cost-efficient maintenance strategies. This is subject of current research projects carried out within the “WindAM” (Wind Asset Management) research group at the Division of Electric Power Engineering, Chalmers, and in close cooperation with SKF and Göteborg Energi.
The project aims at analysing the cost and revenue of a wind turbine during its lifetime, including all costs and revenues related to its installation, operation and dismantling, and with a particular focus on the cost of maintenance and condition-monitoring systems. As a part of the project, an applica-tion shall be developed which allows calculating and comparing the cost of different maintenance strategies / scenarios.
The tasks in this project include:
• Acquisition of fundamental knowledge about wind power systems
• Literature study to make use of related previous work and determine the state of the art regarding wind power economics and cost-effective maintenance strategies
• Expert interviews and web & literature research to determine the costs of interest
(e.g. for turbine installation and grid connection, repair and replacement of different wind tur-bine components, regular preventive maintenance, spare parts, condition-monitoring systems, land rental, insurance, ...)
• Development of a MATLAB application capable of calculating and comparing the cost of different maintenance strategies and scenarios
