Improvement of a HW simulator to a faster and more versatile tool

Background and aim
The simulator for Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion, usually called “RobSim”, is a very well estimated tool for both testing and verification of software. Each SW developer has it own RobSim.
This simulator has some drawbacks and limitations; in addition it is pretty expensive.
The Aim of this project is to reduce the size, the complexity and the price of the RobSim.
The students will understand the function of the present simulator, discuss with developers and verification engineers about its limitations or missing functions. The student will then checks if these issues can be fixed and propose a new architecture for the simulator.
A requirement document shall be written and reviewed with the concerned people within Elekta. When this document is approved, the construction work can start.
Electronics and PCB design (on Mentor Graphics)
The new card for the Simulator shall be designed using our tool (Mentor Graphics).
VHDL design for FPGA (probably Altera)
A FPGA will probably replace the current solution.
RobSim is running on a PC and written in LabView. Any updates requires labview programming
The project will be carried out in its entirety at the Elekta Instrument AB office in Stockholm. Expenses during Prototyping will be paid by Elekta. Computers, software and all office tools will be supplied by Elekta. Meetings will be planned on a running basis, and when there are specific project questions or concerns that need special attention.
