Evaluation and Testing of Prototype Battery System

Reliable energy storage systems (ESSs) are required for the development of cost efficient electric- and hybrid electric vehicles. In order to secure a reliable energy storage system, the monitoring and control of the battery are extremely important. At Volvo Technology a prototype battery system has been developed. The system consists of battery cells, sensors and microprocessors.

Suitable background
Master students with an electronic and/or computer technology education are preferred. Experience from electronic measurement instruments and/or battery technology is a merit.

Description of thesis work
The microprocessors in the system estimate the charge level of the cells from measured voltage and current. One additional task of the microprocessor is to balance the cells. Good balance means that the cells have almost equal voltages.
The primary objective with the thesis work is to develop and perform test procedures to evaluate the accuracy in charge level estimation and the cell balancing performance.
