Development of a software for Reliability activities at Volvo Powertrain

About us
Volvo Powertrain is the Strategic Centre for powertrain issues in the Volvo Group. The scope covers complete powertrain systems, components such as engines, transmissions and driven axles, including development, manufacturing, sourcing, partnership, installation service and support in close co-operation with the customers. Volvo Powertrain has operations in Sweden, France, Spain, North and South America and Japan.

Abstract/Background
The term “product quality” can be described as a function of several dimensions. Garvin (1984) uses eight main dimensions to describe product quality, performance, features, reliability, conformance, durability, serviceability, aesthetics, and perceived quality. In a study among first tier automotive suppliers, Curcovic, Vickery et al. (1999) has shown a positive correlation between reliable products and firms financial performance. In the truck business, the yearly Heavy Truck Survey has shown that the features reliability is one of the most important features building up the Volvo brands image and reputation. It is especially important when a customer decides to repurchase a Volvo Truck see e.g. HTS 2001, 2002, 2003. As a result, it is crucial to develop and manufacture product with high reliability.

These demands require effective processes, tools and methodologies in product development. Thereby, we need guidelines and software that utilize statistical or other techniques in order to support reliability activities.

2 students - Master of Science in Computer science / Programming, with some knowledge of statistics.

Description of thesis work
Some of the activities include:
1. A benchmark of existing quality and reliability software
2. Develop a pilot software for quality and reliability improvements
3. Recommendations for improvement of current software and guidelines.
