Routing Metrics for Low Power and Lossy Networks

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Recent research results promote the adoption of IPv6 in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). These networks are typically based on low-power nodes with lossy links. In order to make possible IPv6 routing in such networks, the RPL protocol is currently being designed by IETF. RPL can be used in various contexts, that is why it relies on an Objective Function (OF) that can be tuned depending on the network needs.

The objective of this thesis is to experimentally investigate objective functions. After a brief literature overview of RPL and routing metrics, the student will analyse existing OFs, implement some of them, and evaluate their performance (according to various needs) in simulation or using real sensor motes. If this is relevant, he will design new OFs and evaluate them as well.

NES is one of the leading European research groups in the area of WSNs. NES has developed the well-known Contiki operating system and the COOJA simulator. We are looking for a top, creative student with a strong interest in wireless networking and sensor networks. Very good C programming skills are required. Since the work is performed in an international environment, good communication skills in English are required.
