Determination of furan fatty acids in natural triglyceride oils

Lipid analysis is one of the main research areas at the Department of analytical chemistry at Stockholm university. One part of the work is related to the development of chromatographic separation methods for analysis of individual lipids but also on a semi-preparative scale for further analysis by NMR spectroscopy. A range of detectors is utilized for analytical chromatography including light scattering, charged aerosol detectors (CAD), and mass spectrometry. Another part of the work is related to investigating the detailed composition of industrial lipid materials. The aim of this work is to get a better understanding of composition/property relations which are essential knowledge to the use of lipids in, for example, food and pharmaceutical products. This is particularly important since lipids are increasingly used due to health aspects, such as omega-3 fatty acids, but also as providers of defined physical structures, such as emulsions and liposomes. The quality of lipid materials for any industrial use has to be judged from its individual components.
The diploma/degree projects within the lipid analysis programme will be designed on a case-by-case basis to best comply with the interest, background and experience of the individual student.
