Introduction to the project
We are looking for a diligent student interested to get a deeper knowledge in state-of-the-art heat treatment of bearings
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate an exciting and promising new heat treatment based on high temperature, low pressure thermo-chemical process. There is an increasing market need for bearings that withstand tough running conditions, especially for bearings combining corrosion, strength and good wear resistance properties.
With traditional heat treating processes and related steel selection there is always a choice to be made: what material property to sacrifice? However with this new process a unique opportunity seems to present itself.
The process is a heat treatment process similar to case hardening, but it uses nitrogen instead of carbon as an enrichment medium. The industrial process combines low pressure furnaces with high-pressure gas quenching and uses environmental friendly gases.
Heat treatment tests will be conducted and comparison will be made with standard nitrocarburising (ferritic and austenitic) regarding obtainable microstructures, corrosion properties and material strength.
The thesis covers 20 weeks and can begin now.
This project will be performed at SKF Group MDC, at SKF Sverige AB in Göteborg, Sweden.
