In-cylinder combustion simulation using CFD

Background
Scania works continuously to develop internal combustion engines which can achieve low pollutant emissions and high efficiency in order to fulfill upcoming legislations and to be competitive. This requires an increased understanding of the combustion processes involved. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools can play a great role in helping us understand complex fluid phenomena and to obtain detailed information, such as pollutant formation, which is difficult to obtain otherwise. This information can then be used to propose design improvement.

Objectives
The aim of the master thesis is to investigate piston bowl shape optimization method with respect to pollutant emissions and combustion efficiency using CFD.

Task description
Litterature study
Evaluation of the CFD tool and the optimization tool
Definition of a simulation map and carry out the simulations
Propose an optimized piston geometry
Report

Requirements and work period
Master of science or similar with knowledge in fluid mechanics, combustion, and/or numerical analysis.

Starting date: end of August – beginning of September
duration: 20 weeks
