NEXT GENERATION OPTIMIZED VIDEO CODING

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Background

The state-of-the-art video compression standard H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC has become the leading standard for video services such as HDTV, Blu-ray, mobile TV and video conferencing. However, the overall growth of video services and the availability of better compression algorithms have encouraged the development of High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), which is currently standardized as a joint effort by MPEG and ITU. HEVC is still subject to changes but most of the fundamental technology is in place. Encoder and decoder implementations applying to the current working draft are available, although far from optimized for conditions in real applications.

Task

The objective of this thesis is to study the technology behind HEVC, especially in terms of subjective quality and complexity performance. The thesis will focus on real scenario applications such as video conferencing and broadcast TV. The goal is to estimate the impact of different tools and to find ways of reducing complexity and improving subjective quality. The thesis will contain a theoretical study, design and implementation, and a technical report.

Competence

We are looking for a bright M.Sc. student with interests in video coding and programming. You should have good programming skills in C. Experience in optimization and low level programming is desirable.

Ericsson Research – Visual Technology

The thesis work will be done at the Visual Technology unit at Ericsson Research in Kista outside Stockholm. The unit is responsible for research related to video & image coding, quality and processing for multimedia communication and distribution.

Applications should contain the following documents: a short personal letter, recent grades (undergraduate and master studies) and a CV. Candidates are invited to send their applications as soon as possible.
