Android based – Internet connection status and performance of today

Background: The Acreo NETLAB department performs research related to telecommunications. In the Acreo National Test Bed, real end users are involved, in order to facilitate feedback from real end users. This feedback may be in the form of questionnaires on Internet usage, or testing of new services. The purpose of the networking activities is to build better communication networks.

Tasks for the master thesis worker(s):
The idea is to make it easier to get feedback from the test users, and also to enable a new way of collecting statistics in relation to the traffic measurements. For these too purposes, we would like to see an android program that can be installed on the end users’ android tablet.
- Make an overview and comparison of existing internet status and performance analyzing tools.
- Client program works on an android based tablet.
- Client program enables a feedback functionality (like a green, orange and red button to click)
- Client program is able to monitor certain statistics, like:
o Packets sent and received on Ethernet interfaces (similar to wire shark)
o Available/consumed bandwidth
o Filtering packets of interest, e.g. http get, TCP SYN, etc
o Collecting the statistics, and storing it on a remote server
- The server program works on a Linux server

Requirements: Linux, TCP/IP and programming skills in Android.
