Generalization and extensive validation of a CFD model for heat transfer in sub-cooled boiling bubbly two-phase flow using OpenFOAM

Project discription:

CFD simulations of the flow of sub-cooled water in a vertical heated channel will be performed. Such are motivated by the flow field in the lower part of the core of Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) where the heat transfer from the fuel to the cooling water depends on the boiling process and the two-phase flow. Models which describe the steam generation at sub-cooled boiling and the subsequent condensation in the bulk of the flow have been implemented in the open source code OpenFOAM. Within the present project these models need to be improved and generalized to be applicable not only to quasi two-dimensional pipe flow but also to a more general 3D geometry. E.g. a fuel bundle will be simulated and the results need to be compared to and validated more extensively against a wider range of experimental data.

From 2012-01-10.

Position:

KTH, NRT 80 % and Vattenfall R & D (VRD) 20 %.

After a successfully finished master thesis (i.e. orally defended and reported according to the KTH standards) Vattenfall hands out a gratuity, which is decided by the supervisor/s based on the quality and the outcome of the thesis.

Demands:

Basic knowledge in fluid mechanics and thermo dynamics/thermo hydraulics. Specific knowledge within the field of two-phase flow and C++-programing.
