MSc/BSc project on Marine Piston Ring Corrosion, spring term 2012

Marine engines operate on Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) with a sulfur high content. During combustion, HFO combustion products will become acid. Normally, additives in cylinder lubrication oil will neutralize the acid combustion products. Still, piston rings and cylinder liner will always to some degree be attacked by corrosion. The piston ring / cylinder liner are designed to cope with a certain degree of corrosion. However, in some engines the corrosive environment will destroy the piston ring coating, thus leading to excessive wear or even cylinder liner scuffing (failure).
Today, marine piston rings are either galvanically coated with a chrome-based material or plasma-sprayed with a thermal coating. Both coating types are well known to have a good corrosion resistance. However, they will corrode under certain conditions.
This project aims at developing laboratory methods that replicate corrosion damages seen in the field. Such methods are needed for assessing the corrosion resistance of future piston ring coatings.
The project will be carried out at Federal-Mogul Göteborg’s laboratory in Mölnlycke and is suitable for two students.
Principal project plan:
- Literature survey on corrosion in marine engines.
- General training of laboratory testing of piston rings including bonding strength, sample preparation and microscopy, rig testing and corrosion testing including long-term exposure and potentiodynamic scanning.
- Improvement of current laboratory test methods.
- Benchmarking of existing coating portfolio with new methods.
