Using Google Solutions for System Design

Background:
Axis delivers a number of system design tools to help surveillance system designers successfully plan solutions based on Axis' products. A very important part of the system planning process is camera placement and camera coverage. Today Axis offers drawings and symbols for use with tools from Autodesk (AutoCAD) and Microsoft (Visio) to support this part of the design process. For smaller system design companies, however, professional CAD solutions can be overly complex and prohibitively expensive. We would therefore like to explore the capabilities found in the tools offered by Google, mainly Google SketchUp and Google Earth/Map, from a system design perspective.

Goal:
The main purpose of this master thesis is to investigate and gather an in-depth understanding of tools and solutions offered by Google, and define additional files/material needed to optimize the tools for design of IP surveillance systems. Main focus should be given SketchUp and Earth, but a complete review of Google’s offering and roadmap should be included. One part is to investigate the capabilities of the Google SketchUp platform and suggest a solution, possibly based on the Google SketchUp Ruby API, allowing system designers to plan camera placement and visualize camera coverage within Google SketchUp. A key aspect is the user experience, allowing the solution to be accessible to users who have little experience in using CAD tools. The other main part is to review Google Earth and Maps and how this can be used in the design process. How can layouts and area plans be created, and how can camera data be implemented into these plans. Is there any values of using positioning data, and could this data be used inside the tools. Based upon the gathered understanding, the work also includes defining how the identified valued and functions could be implemented into Axis’ current tool offering.
