Validation of Traffic Impact Model using Air Quality Data

Introduction
Transport demands have increased dramatically over the past two decades. Sustainability is a paramount issue for traffic planning and management, because development of traffic system is, on one hand, connected with social economic growth while putting enormous pressure on environment on the other hand. Reduction of fuel consumption and air pollution induced by traffic has therefore become a more and more serious concern in transport planning and management as well as for vehicle industry.
To evaluate sustainability of road traffic system, traffic impact models are formulated by integration of traffic and emission models. However, the validity of such models is still unknown because emission impacts of traffic fleets cannot be measured directly in reality. Instead, air quality surveillance data becomes more and more available due to the wide deployment of air quality sensors in cities, especially the mobile ones.

Master thesis
This thesis has an objective of validating traffic impact model, a synergy of microscopic traffic simulation and emission models, using air quality data collected on streets at Stockholm. Air dispersion models can be even applied to estimate air quality from emission estimation of traffic fleets, and vice versa.
M.Sc. Students with relevant backgrounds, such as civil and environmental engineering, physics, mechanical or vehicle engineering, may work on certain aspect of the project as towards their degree. A prior knowledge of scientific computing, vehicle engineering or traffic engineering will add benefits for the completion of the degree project. The student is expected to have solid analytical skill and certain programming capability.
