Eco-Efficiency Analysis

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
AkzoNobel is one of the world’s leading industrial companies. Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, we make and supply a broad range of paints, coatings and specialty chemicals. We are the largest global paints and coatings company and as a major producer of specialty chemicals we supply industries worldwide with quality ingredients for life’s essentials. We think about the future, but act in the present. We’re passionate about introducing new ideas and developing sustainable answers for our customers. That’s why our 60,000 employees—who are based in more than 80 countries—are committed to excellence and delivering Tomorrow’s Answers Today.

The Sustainable Development group is a department within AkzoNobel Technology & Engineering, offering a wide array of environmental and sustainability services. One service is Eco-Efficiency Analysis (EEA) which quantifies the environmental and financial performance of a product, process, service or investment from a life cycle perspective. The EEA results in a recommendation of which alternative that is preferable to invest in from an eco-efficiency perspective.

Eka Chemicals is a Business Unit within AkzoNobel which supplies performance chemicals and technology to the global pulp and paper industry. Sustainability is high on the agenda and the strategies and investment decisions need to be based on reliable eco-efficiency analyses.

The general procedure for carrying out an EEA is to combine and integrate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC). The LCA assesses the environmental performance of the system under study and the LCC the financial performance. An Eco-efficiency analysis has recently been completed for bleaching chemicals supply to a pulp mill in Asia-Pacific. This will be available as a starting point for the current thesis.

The overall purpose of the thesis will be to develop the eco-efficiency analysis tool to a stage where it can be used for strategic decisions regarding investments in process technologies for supply of chemicals to pulp and paper mills in growth markets, and to develop the process for efficient data retrieval and quality assurance.

More concrete examples of what is expected are: Develop the EEA tool to:
- include a model that allows for study of different geographic locations of bleaching chemicals productin
- map the current sources and channels for data input to the models and suggest processes to improve both access and quality
- propose additional scenarios and/or features to meet future sustainability demands

The thesis worker is expected to do literature studies in the field of eco-efficiency methodology and local environmental regulations, as well as studies of specific EEA projects previously carried out. Furthermore, the literature study should cover how various sustainability tools are used in strategic decisions within large enterprises. Identify where necessary data for eco-efficiency studies are available within the Eka organization and document according to available standards.

The students will have office at AkzoNobel Sustainable Development Group, Järntorget, and also spend considerable time at Eka Chemicals, Bohus.

The thesis is a 30 hp Master degree in engineering, preferably industrial or chemical engineering. Any knowledge or experience in the field of sustainability, LCA and economics is considered an additional qualification.
