Chemical precipitation of black water from Skogaberg

Subject: Chemical precipitation of black water from Skogaberg

Period: From August/September to December 2006.

Location: The work is carried out at the pilot plant installation at Skogaberg.

Background
The Department for Sustainable Water & Waste in Gothenburg has carried out tests with reverse osmosis to regain nutrients from black water (waste water from toilets and organic waste from kitchen grinders). The membrane filtration was applied directly on raw black water with only a 0,6 mesh drum screen and a acid dosing as a pre-treatment.

The functioning of the membrane filtration was relatively good but the question is anyhow if a simple pre-treatment with precipitation could give a decrease of the fouling and cleaning frequency of the membrane.

Apart from that is membrane filtration interesting as an alternative to regain mainly phosphorus from the black water without further treatment of the black water

Goals
The student who is working with this project will determine the optimal process conditions for:
1. Chemical precipitation for regaining phosphorus from black water from Skogaberg
2. Chemical precipitation as a pre-treatment before membrane filtration

Different chemicals and dosings will be tested primarily on laboratory scale. Besides this a little sedimentation/precipitation installation will be built which is used to control the effect of a higher extent of pre-treatment on reversed osmosis.

Documentation
The student writes a report about her/his observations (in english).

Supervision
The student is guided by the project leader, the process consultant and the responsible employer at location. Besides, usual supervision and acceptance is given by the professor/scientific teacher of the University of the Student.
