Industrial method for non destructive measurement of mercury contents in lamps

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Background
All fluorescent lamps must have a certain level of mercury content in order to give light at all. The mercury (in gaseous form) plays a major role the very energy efficient transformation of electrical energy into visible light, known and used since 1937. Although most fluorescent lamps are recycled the mercury content must be kept to a minimum due to the intrinsic hazardousness of the material. To day the most common method to measure (and control) the mercury level is to destroy lamps and measure the content by absorption methods. Aura Light International AB has on single lamps successfully tested a principle to measure the mercury content with a non-destructive method. The method now needs to take the next step(s) in order to become industrial applicable.
Objectives
- To develop a detailed and automatic test method for three fluorescent lamps.
- To calibrate and verify the method for industrial purposes.
- To design and build an industrial and automatic measuring equipment for 10 lamps.
Project description
The principle for the method has been successfully tested for single lamps. By playing with the electrical load of the lamps and surrounding temperature, the mercury is forced to be transported inside the lamp, from one end to the other. For higher mercury contents this transportation takes longer time for a given electrical load, and therefore it may be measured (after calibration). Critical testing parameters are surrounding temperature profile, current control and recording and analysis of important parameters. A fully automatic test equipment for industrial use is going to be built and verified in the project. The students are expected to design, build and verify this sophisticated testing equipment with all test control units and data analysis systems needed. The work is done in close collaboration with our R&D staff at our plant in Karlskrona.
