Reconstructing the auroral precipitation from multispectral imaging

Multispectral imaging is a rapidly developing technique in auroral studies. The aurora is imaged simultaneously in several spectral lines,
originating from different excited species in the atmosphere. Auroral electrons of different energies result in different height profiles
of the emissions. The 3D volume distribution of emissions is projected on the 2D image plane, complicating the interpretation of the images.

The suggested MSc project will concentrate on developing techniques for the reconstruction of the characteristics of the electron precipitation
from images taken in different spectral lines. The reconstruction techniques will be tested on a number of actual events taken with the ASK multispectral imager.

The project is carried out in collaboration with University of Tromsö.
