Cost Benefit Evaluation of Defrost Methods for Display Cabinets in Supermarkets

Despite of the fact that supermarket refrigeration has been commercially available for many years, there still exist several issues regarding defrost, e.g. minimum energy usage during a defrost cycle, elapsed time between initiation of defrost sequence and defrost sequence length. At the IUC/SEK in Katrineholm, a test supermarket system has been built and is up and running. Experimental data from different defrost solutions, as indicated above, are to be evaluated from a technical and economical perspective.
There is a considerable potential for increased food quality, more reliable system operation and lower energy consumption from a successful project outcome.

More specifically, the thesis work will investigate:
o Cost of advanced system compared to simple traditional systems
o Benefits from energy consumptions point of view with advanced systems, by
o Experimental investigation at IUC/SEK
o Experimental field investigation
o Display Cabinets performance using
o Thermostatic Expansion Valves
o Electronic Expansion Valves
o Different defrost solutions, such as:
o For freezer cabinets
 Electric defrost
 Hot gas defrost
 Passive defrost
o For intermediate temperature cabinets
 Passive defrost
 Passive heating of brine fluid
 Active heating of brine fluid
o Initiation of defrost sequence
o By logging temperatures, flows etc
o By using predictive methods
o Termination of defrost sequence
o By logging temperature
o By predictive methods

This study is a subproject within a research cooperation between IUC/Sveriges Energi & Kylcentrum (www.iuc-sek.se) and KTH Energy Technology.
