Total size distribution of coarse clastic sediment
The aim of this x-job is to study determine the total size distribution of the till and glaciofluvium. The project requires development of new methods. It is easy to determine the size distribution of the just the clasts >2cm (another masters thesis project) as well as the size distribution of a sample of the till consisting of particles < 2 cm. The problem that faces the student is how to put different measurements of parts of a total till sample into one size distribution curve.
There will be extensive fieldwork collecting about 8 more samples in different types of coarse clastic material, till and glaciofluvium. Several masters and doctorate students will work together to collect data about the till, glaciofluvium and bedrock at these sites. Numerous geophysical methods will be made prior to excavation of the site. Samples will be taken for different projects. This project will use the results of the size distribution of the clasts > 2 cm (another project) and combined it with the size distribution, from traditional sieve analysis of the fractions < 2 cm, in order to produce a total size distribution.
The project is suitable for either an engineering or a geology student which has good mathematical and data handling skills.
The advisor of the project is Docent Joanne Fernlund. You will also work in close cooperation with other master students working on associated projects and well as doctorate student Mimmi Arvidsson.
