BACKGROUND

Optimizing the shape of a passenger vehicle is crucial to obtain a low drag which is an important step towards low fuel consumption. Additionally, there is a current trend (e.g. from future legal requirements) to reduce CO2 emissions. Influencing the shape of a vehicle in its earliest phases is one way to obtain both lower CO2 emissions and lower fuel consumption. In this case, shape optimization means large changes in the proportions of a vehicle, in contrary to detail optimization. Examples are: Front and rear overhang, width, height, length, front and rear screen inclination, tumble home, etc. One way to predict the effect of proportional changes is to use a so-called expert system.

The goal is to be able to give fast feedback to design in early phases when the proportions of the vehicle are decided.


DIPLOMA WORK PLAN

1.
Investigate current expert systems. Do they need improvements (updates, simplifications, user friendliness) based on earlier experience?
2.
Choose system or method based on selected criteria
3.
Test the system on known vehicles to investigate its precision
4.
Investigate a particular area where the expert system shows weaknesses (using CFD or 1:5 model scale?)
5.
Try the system on an unknown vehicle and confirm with a more accurate method.


SUITABLE STUDENT BACKGROUND

Good knowledge in fluid mechanics and aerodynamics is required. Knowledge of CFD codes and mesh generation software is not required, but it will be considered as an asset. Knowledge of experimental wind tunnel techniques is not required, but it will be considered as an asset.
