Investigation of packages for graphics rendering for a web server based application

Effective immediately Spotfire AB in Göteborg has the opportunity to offer two skilled students an interesting and challenging master degree thesis opportunity (20p).

New AJAX based applications that include server side image generation poses an interesting challenge in regards of performance and server load. Traditionally web servers have been optimized for managing large data flows from databases to clients and to give fast access to a large amount of HTML documents, now it becomes more and more important to be able to effectively perform tasks that previously have been handled by the desk top computers, i.e. render images on demand.

Goal
The thesis research will involve an investigation of different methods for on demand image generation for web servers. Spotfire is interested in evaluating how different packages for image generation can be used and what kind of hardware acceleration can be used in this environment.

Expected content of the research
We expect that the following will be part of the work involved in the research:
• Investigation of how well different graphics packages can be used on a server platform. Examples of software packages and standards are; OpenVG, AmanithVG, OpenGL Direct X and GDI+
• Design and implement a prototype for how one of these packages can be utilized in a multi-CPU environment with a large number of simultaneous users.
Expected student background
We anticipate that the work involved in the research will require a strong background in Computer Science.

The work involved will require good knowledge in:
• Computer graphics
• Programming (C#)

The work will be performed at Spotfires offices in Göteborg, Sweden
