Video encoder quantization optimization
In video compression, pictures are compressed one-by-one by creating a prediction of the picture and coding the picture difference between the original picture and this prediction picture. Information on how to construct the prediction as well as the prediction difference information is written to the bitstream.
The video compression process is controlled by a quantization parameter which can be changed within individual pictures on a block-by-block basis. The quantization parameter provides a trade-off between picture quality and bitrate, e.g. a lower quantization value results in better video quality but higher bitrate. We believe that carefully varying the quantization parameter within pictures will result in higher compression efficiency compared to using fixed quantization.
The objective of this thesis work is to study and optimize video encoding by selecting optimal quantization values. Both low-bitrate mobile phone video as well as digital TV video will be studied. The main work will be done using existing H.264 video encoder/decoder software (C code) developed at Ericsson Research.
The work will contain:
• Theoretical studies
• Implementation of encoder algorithms in software
• Analysis of encoder performance with regards to compression efficiency both in rate-distortion sense as well as subjective comparisons of video sequences
• Technical report
We are looking for a bright M.Sc student with interest and knowledge in algorithm design. Good programming skills in C or the ability to learn it fast is also a requirement.
