Characterisation of Polymer Solutions by High Throughput Methodology

Background

The Multi Parameter Scanning (MPS) instrument developed by Scanalys AB is a new tool for the automatic acquisition, processing and presentation of data related to composition-temperature dependent conditions and events in liquids. It can be used for the investigation, characterization and visualization of phase conditions of liquid systems such as pharmaceutical preparations, cleaning solutions, paint pigment dispersions, cosmetic formulations, lubricants, dairy products etc. The method gives access to and assists in the presentation of data concerning liquid systems which otherwise require great efforts to obtain.

Polymers are widely used for as for example viscosity modifiers, delayed release agents, coacervating agents. One such group of polymer are cellulose ethers. The molecular properties of these are greatly influenced by the reaction conditions during production. Therefore, there is a need for improved methods for the characterization of the physical properties of cellulose ethers in aqueous solution for quality control. Examples of important physical properties are viscosity, cloud point, dissolution time and flocculation temperature in particle systems.

Objectives

 Produce a protocol for the handling of cellulose ethers to study the dissolution properties under controlled conditions, i.e. without lump formation, and to measure viscosity during the dissolution process.
 Describe the physical properties of cellulose ethers in aqueous solution with respect to temperature, polymer concentration, ionic strength, pH both in the presence or absence of a third interacting component e.g. surfactants or particles.
 Reduce particle flocculation caused by cellulose ethers in order to prevent particle sedimentation and unwanted viscosity changes in water borne paints.
 Study the effect of different surfactants on associating polymers to minimize unwanted viscosity changes due to polymer surfactant interactions

Requirements
Program in chemical engineering or related topics.
Start: Autumn 2007. 20 credit points.
