Firstly, the student will conduct a literature survey on the state-of-the-art on transmission links employing polymer optical fibres (POF) and multimode fibres (MMF) in general. Secondly, the student will study the transmission impairments and bandwidth limits of POF and MMF fibres using a software simulation tool. A parallel track will be followed to implement an experimental setup to perform transmission experiments, targeted at validating the simulation results and exploring the capabilities of POF and MMF for broadband networking. This study will also, depending on the available time, explore the use of multilevel modulation formats and/or optical OFDM techniques. Finally, the student will write a thesis and defend it in an oral presentation.
