Pre-drying of polymers
In order to increase competitiveness we try hard to continuously improve production processes and by doing so minimize disturbances and amount of scrap. Frequent follow-ups of scrap outcome and discrepancies generate activities for the processing sectors to carry out by themselves or with assistance from supportive functions like the processing engineers and the material department.
A vital part in the cable production plant is polymer extrusion. Insulations, sheaths and tubes are extruded mainly with thermoplastics like PE, PP, PBT, PA and flame retarded polyolefins. Some polymers are susceptible to moisture and the main purposes with this thesis work are to study which polymers exhibit changes in physical properties when exposed to a humid environment and to investigate the benefits with pre-drying of polymers. What effect will pre-drying have on processing performance, mechanical properties and scrap outcome?
The thesis also aims to analyze what economic gain will be obtained from investment in drying equipment and pre-drying of materials.
The work will allow hands-on training in laboratory and processing environments and also include theoretical studies and statistical calculations.
This is a thesis work for students in the Master of Science in Material Technology or any other relevant technical discipline.
Knowledge in the areas of polymeric compounds and extrusion of polymers is an advantage.
