Quantification of temporal changes in metal loads – moss data over 20 years

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
The Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) hosts databases that contain concentrations of metals in terrestrial mosses, sampled during national moss surveys. Moss monitoring was initiated in 1975 Scandinavia and at present it is carried out in many European countries every fifth year. The data are in point form, and the samples have been taken considering a distance of at least 400 meters from any houses or infrastructure. The concentration of chemical elements in terrestrial mosses can thus be thought to reflect only or mostly airborne pollution levels. These data are unique and can be used to study long-term changes in air pollution and metal loads. One of the difficulties with analysing the changes in metal concentrations in time is related to different sampling locations over the surveys. In addition, the data are sparse and very irregularly distributed. In order to present such data as a continuous surface, interpolation is needed. Single-metal maps have been produced by IVL (http://www.ivl.se/miljo/projekt/mossa/)while the association and correlation of different metals and local trends have not been studied in detail. Using exploratory data analysis techniques the original datasets can be searched for multi-element patterns and spatial trends. In combination with statistical analysis and GIS, different hypotheses can be tested and visualized on maps. The project will develop techniques for mapping spatio-temporal datasets and visualizing environmental changes.
Software: ArcGIS, statistical, visualization.
Language: English or Swedish.
