Loop Qualification for Broadband Access

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
According to the last ITU-T Internet Report broadband access currently sees a growth rate unchallenged by any previous communication technology. The major share of this growth is claimed by the xDSL technology. The high number of already installed DSL lines together with the earlier mentioned growth rate puts very high requirements on an efficient installation process but also on operations and maintenance. Typical questions a customer may have are Can I have a connection service with x Mb/s? or I want to upgrade my existing subscription to y Mb/s. For operators it is very important to answer these questions precisely and efficient, i.e. trial and error is an unacceptable approach. Sufficient knowledge of the loop plant is essential for these or other operation and maintenance related issues. Loop Qualification provides this necessary knowledge.
Loop Qualification mainly depends on two measurement approaches: Single-ended Line Test (SELT) and Dual-ended Line Test (DELT). In case of DELT both the central office (CO) and the customer¿s modem are connected to the line, line measurements are typically easy to perform. In case of SELT only the CO modem is connected, measuring of loop attenuation and noise is therefore more complicated. An impulse applied to the line at the CO side creates an echo at the (un-terminated) customer side. Analyses of this echo impulse response leads to estimates of loop impulse response and transfer function.
During this master thesis the student develops a simple development environment to test novel Loop Qualification algorithms. This environment is written in Matlab and C and enables communication with the test-hardware, which typically is a CO ADSL modem. This interface should allow testing of SELT and DELT algorithms written in Matlab on the test-hardware.
This work corresponds to a 20-point thesis work. Preferred starting data would be either beginning of June or middle of August.

Competence:

This master thesis is aimed for students with interest in signal processing. Skills in Matlab, C, and micro-controller programming are required. Furthermore knowledge in SNMP is desirable.
