Gradients of structural properties in paper and board

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Paper, a fiber-based material known for approximately 2000 years, is undergoing a continuous evolution towards new and improved products with lighter weight. The mechanical properties and absorption and printing characteristics of paper products are ultimately determined by the microscopic arrangement of approximately 1 million fibers per gram paper. Therefore, paper scientists are interested in experimental methods to study and characterize the structure of paper.
One particularly interesting field of research activity is the study of structural properties in the thickness direction of the sheet, a prerequisite of which is the operation splitting the original paper ample in many thin layers. Splitting, also known as parallel sectioning, can now be performed with a heat seal lamination technique ¿ a technique that has been studied at STFI, The Swedish Pulp and Paper Research Institute.
The goal of this Master¿s thesis project is to develop analysis tools to studies gradients of structural properties of paper in the thickness direction of the sample. In-plane homogeneity of mass distribution, characterization of wire markings on the surface of the sample and degree of coverage of the inner layers by the outer surfaces are examples of structural properties that can be investigated. A combina-tion of experimental activities with image analysis will constitute the core of the proposed project.
Aims:
· Improvement of measurement technique.
· Layer-wise analysis of structural properties of paper webs.
· ¿Reconstruction¿ of paper structures.

The thesis should preferably be written in English.
