Design and construction of a multipulse impulse generator

Multiplicity of current impulses is an inherent feature of lightning flashes to ground. About 70 % of lightning flashes have 2 to 20 strokes; in average 3 to 4 strokes with intervals of 15 to 150 milliseconds between strokes. In spite of this fact the majority of lightning tests are performed using single impulses. For insulation tests of equipment single impulse test is usually sufficient and can give adequate results. However, when testing various protective components (varistors, spark gaps, fuses) the multiple impulses can create substantially larger damage than the single impulses.

The aim of the work is to design and construct a multipulse generator that can give up to 5 impulses of specified waveshape and amplitude, with the delay time between each pulse a variable from 20 to 100 milliseconds.

The tasks to perform:

* Literature survey of the existing techniques for multipulse generation
* Design of a multipulse generator with required specifications
* Construction of the generator
* Test the construction
* Work report

The work shall be performed at Division for Electricity and lightning Research, Department of Material Science, Uppsala University.
