Evaluation of Future Services in a Wireless Environment

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
With the emerging of mobile Internet, new applications will be available in the future. Examples of what these new services can be have been suggested in for example WWRF, [1], which is a forum for the companies and universities shaping and investigating the future of wireless communication.
The new applications are of course very hard to predict accurately, but with some smaller effort it is possible to identify a subset of applications that can be studied as representatives for future services.
Problem Definition
To be able to evaluate new services in a wireless environment it is necessary to find the basic elements of the user behavior for these new services, e.g. where the users use the service and for how long time. Another important aspect is also how much data that the users send/receive during the active period.
The user requirements on the received bits are also a part of the user-centered evaluation of the service performance. The radio link will distort the sent bits due to variations in the quality of the connection and also add some extra delay to the transmission of data. How much distortion and how long delays that are tolerable
to the user are other important aspects of the evaluation of the service.
The thesis will consist of three main parts:
Creating traffic models for the new services based on end user behavior and higher layer protocols, e.g., TCP, UDP.
Creating evaluation criteria for the new services describing what requirements the end users put on the communication link, e.g., bit rate and delay.
Performing system simulations of different access technologies, e.g., GPRS, WCDMA and IEEE 802.11b, to evaluate the performance of the new services.
Extension:
A possible extension of the thesis is to include an evaluation of the services with additional access technologies, e.g. OFDM.
