Evaluation of the role of a novel adipokine in obesity and metabolic disease

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Adipose tissue has for centuries been considered to be an organ for energy storage. The discovery of leptin as an adipocyte-derived hormone that signals to the brain has changed the research community’s view of the adipose tissue. Today, a growing number of factors that are secreted from adipocytes have been identified and these factors are called adipokines. Several adipokines play a major role in obesity and metabolic disease. Using a whole genome search strategy for adipocyte–specific genes we have identified a gene encoding a novel adipokine. Our preliminary data show that this adipokine display an expression pattern and regulation that strongly indicates that it plays an important role in obesity related metabolic disease.
The overall aim of this project is to elucidate the role of the novel adipokine in human metabolic disease and the evaluation of the role of the novel adipokine will be performed using in vitro functional studies and in vivo studies in obese mice
Lessons learned from studies of adipokines have highlighted the role of these factors in the development of metabolic disorders. The investigation of novel adipokines is very important to increase our understanding of the complex mechanisms that drive metabolic diseases.
