DESIGN AND PROGRAMMING OF AN ADAPTIVE SOLAR TRACKER

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
An exciting thesis opportunity that combines C-coding, solar algorithms, fault tolerance and practical work with large solar installations.

BACKGROUND
Absolicon Solar Concentrator AB and Lumicum Laboratory in Härnösand has developed a unique solar concentrator that produce both heat and electricity. Our product, the X10 has a parabolic trough that focus the sunlight onto a small receiver with water-cooled high efficiency solar cells. You can read more about us on www.absolicon.com and www.lumicum.com.
Lumicum has a long history of working in student projects and we are always looking for new students that are interested to work with us. The student we are looking for is ambitious and self reliant. Most of the work is done in our facilities in Härnösand where we offer nice student accommodations. Many of our thesis workers have started working in Lumicum and Absolicon while others have moved along into research or other work, we take pride in helping our students to succeed and reach their goals.

PROBLEM
The X10 solar collector use linear electrical actuators to contionusly track the sun during the day. The tracking software written in C and run by a Linux-Ubuntu system. The communications between the tracking computer and the actuators is done by ModBUS on a RS485 line. One computer can control up to 100 acturator slaves. The tracking algorithm is based on time, date, geographical and physical position.
The main task of this project is to introduce a maximum power point algorithm into the tracking software. This means that the tracker always searches for the position where the energy production is maximized which may differ from the optimal position based on the currently used parameters. The feedback from the X10 consists of electrical production and temperature data.
PROJECT GOALS
Increase the efficiency of the X10 solar tracker and present the results at the world’s largest solar energy conference – PVSEC 2010 in Valencia.

QUALIFICATIONS
This is a master thesis in computer science, the student shall;
• Be ready to start at latest February 2010
• Have good knowledge of C-programming. Knowledge of ModBUS/CabBUS, MySQL and Linux-Ubuntu is also a big advantage
• Have high ambitions and be very organized.
