Realistic 3D – applications, algorithms, and analysis
Realistic 3D is a natural extension in the strive for an authentic presence. It presents a 3D image or –video where the depicted scene shows a realistic depth and a perspective that changes naturally as the observer changes viewing position; all without the need user-worn spectacles. Applications can be found in the fields of digital signs, medical diagnostics, product design and construction, entertainment such as games and 3DTV, videoconference, and mobile telephony.
The research group Realistic 3D at Mid Sweden University pursues research, and related education, in the fields of multimedia communication systems that utilize realistic 3D as part. Our main research areas are: synthesis and capture of 3D images and video, modeling of 3D devices, coding of 3D images and video, and 3D quality metrics.
A number of projects are available that relate to realistic 3D, both within Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. For example:
- Depth estimation algorithms
- Multi camera systems
- Compression schemes for realistic 3D video
- Real-time rendering of realistic 3D animation
- Methods of editing realistic 3D image and –video formats
- and more.
The projects may be conducted on basic (15 credits, BSc) or advanced (30 credits, MSc) level, depending on topic and student request. Successfully completed projects are compensated, and it is possible for students to be co-writer on scientific articles that incorporate project results.
Suitable background is the Y, MT, D, IT, and E civil engineer programs or magister- and masters program in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
Concrete prerequisites are a solid mathematical basis and good programming skills, especially within the context of computer graphics and signal processing. Fluent in Swedish or English is mandatory. Practical experience from image- and video processing and/or electronics design and construction is a merit.
