Effect of escaping photoelectrons on the magnetic field of Mercury

OBS! ANSÖKNINGSTIDEN FÖR DETTA EXJOBB HAR LÖPT UT.
Mercury has a planetary magnetic field which is weak compared to that of the Earth, but significant enough for a magnetosphere to be set up around the planet. The details of the field are poorly known, although the few measurements that have been made indicate that the field may be approximated by a dipole which is offset by about 0.2 planetary radii relative to the centre of the planet. The dipole offset results in a current flow between hemispheres, which has been addressed in an earlier project (Baselga Bacardit, KTH report XR-EE-SPP 2007:002). The current project aims to estimate the effects of this current flow on the planetary magnetic field, for different assumptions affecting the photoelectron current, such as the planetary conductivity and Mercury's distance from the Sun.

Basic knowledge of electrostatics as well as space and/or plasma physics is required as is familiarity with Matlab programming.
