MSc project on spore production and ecology in dead-wood dependent fungi

Shedding of basidiospores which are carried by the wind is the main means of dispersal in most dead-wood dependent fungi such as polypores and corticioids, but remains little studied.
The scope of the proposed project is to find out how spore production differs between fungal species, and how it is affected by variation in weather conditions. Further, populations in isolated and well-connected forests will be compared to see if spore production has decreased in isolated populations due to genetic processes (studied by others in a larger collaborative project).
The project includes field work in boreal and boreonemoral Sweden in September-October 2010, and laboratory work (flow cytometry) in Göteborg in November or December 2010. Differences in spore production among various species will be related to type of basidiome and life-form traits. The project will be supervised by Björn Nordén in collaboration with Jenni Hottola (Oslo University) and Veera Norros (Helsinki University).
