Design and implementation of a GPS map-matching algorithm
The thesis will be with the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Laboratory at KTH. As in many other applications, location data based on GPS are becoming increasingly available in transportation. GPS provides location and time information in the form of latitude, longitude, and altitude, and the current time. The location measurements involve error and because of that, one needs to do pre-processing. One of the essential pre-processing tasks is to match a GPS location with a digital road network in order to find the corresponding point (as close as possible to its true location) on the network’s link. This process is called map-matching.
This project is expected to focus on evaluating and possibly developing map matching algorithms appropriate for transportation applications. The ITS Lab currently receives a lot of GPS data of car locations in the Stockholm area. However, the frequency of these probes is, in some cases relatively low, and from that point of view the map matching problem is particularly interesting. The main tasks involve:
- Literature study about existing map-matching algorithms
- Implementation of promising of them or modified versions (preferably in C++ or Java).
- Testing and evaluation using data already available at the lab.
The student has to have a good background in the following areas:
- Programming in C++ and/or Java
- Good understanding of data structured such as graphs, etc.
And the following is not required but is a plus if you have experience in:
- Machine learning
- (Geographic) data mining
