Fast Encoding of H.264 HD Video
The video coding standard H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10, Advanced Video Coding, AVC) has become the leading standard for video services such as HDTV, Blu-ray, mobile TV and video conferencing. Although the decoding process is fully standardized by the H.264 specification, the encoding step has a lot of freedom and can be optimized for different applications. For video conferencing applications real-time performance is crucial and optimization for encoding speed is necessary.
The objective of this thesis includes studying and developing optimization techniques that can be used for decreasing the complexity of H.264 encoding of HD resolution video, as well as implementing these in an H.264 encoder that has been developed by Ericsson Research. The main focus of the optimization should be manual or automatic SIMD (single instruction multiple data) usage, but other tracks such as clever choices for evaluation in the encoder should also be evaluated. The thesis will contain a theoretical study, design and implementation and a technical report.
We are looking for a bright M.Sc. student with interests in video coding and programming. You should have good programming skills in the programming language C. Experience in optimization and low level programming is desirable.
Ericsson Research – Visual Technology
The thesis work will be done at the Visual Technology unit at Ericsson Research in Kista outside Stockholm. The unit is responsible for research related to video coding, image coding, graphics and image processing for multimedia communication and distribution.
