Possibilities to apply nanotechnology to improve PEX pipe properties

Background
UPONOR PEX pipe is manufactured out of high-density polyethylene using the Engel process. Cross-linking is defined as a process that changes the chemical structure in such a way that the polymer chains connect to each other to create a three-dimensional network through chemical bonds.

This new structure means that it is impossible to melt or dissolve the polymer without first destroying its structure. The PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) pipe material has many positive properties, e.g.:
• High Temperature Resistance
• High Pressure Resistance
• Documented Long Term Strength
• Low Coefficient of Friction
• Pure and Non Toxic
• High Chemical Resistance
• High Elasticity and Impact Strength
• Good Electrical Insulator
• High Abrasion Resistance
• Thermal Memory

The hypothesis is that it should be possible to further improve some of the above unique PEX material properties based on the recent achievements in the area of nanotechnology?

Objectives
To perform a theoretical study aimed at understanding the area of nanotechnology and how (if) this new technology has the potential to be utilized to improve/change the PEX pipe properties. Of special interest are below properties of the pipe material to be analyzed:

1. Friction (already today material can be treated to reject water from textile surfaces)
2. Hygienic (bacteria termination capability)
3. Oxygen diffusion barrier
4. Improved thermal memory
5. Fire resistance capability

Master of Science in a suitable discipline, e.g. Physics, Material, Chemistry
Number of students: 1-2
Starting Date: Upon agreement
Length of work: 20 weeks
