Master’s Thesis Project in Machine and Process Technology

Background:
The machining processes are now required to provide more precise products, and better performance. This includes the optimization of the whole machine and especially within the cutting process. Vibration was the limiting factor in the machining process in the past decade, and the basic theory of explanation has been investigated by many researchers, and also here at Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan(KTH).
The Machine and Process Technology group is now providing a master thesis project within the area of producing an engineering case based damping material, and apply this material in industrial cases to verify the effect of damping, and enhancement of the machining process.
The pilot studies of this project is already finished, and now it is time to take one step further to promote the project research activities.

The Task
The task of this thesis project is to work with a Physical Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition equipment and investigate the factors which might affect the outcome of the product, apply the product on a machining tool, and verify the enhancement of a machining process with demonstration of metal cutting process.

Basic requirement:
Software capabilities, 3D CAD, SolidEdge, etc.
Basic knowledge of Plasma Physics
Basic knowledge of Mechanical Vibration and Damping
Basic knowledge of Material Science
Willing to work in research
Ability to work independently and eager to learn
Good skills of communicating with co-workers
Fluent in English, both written and oral, and possibly in Swedish

Tutorial:
As a research project, the pilot studying is already finished, so complete guidance and supervision is available for newcomers to the field. It will not be necessary that all the requirements are full filled, but basic knowledge should be available in one of the subjects which are important. All the required resource for finishing the project will be provided.

Credits: 30hp

Geographical Area: Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, Stockholm, Sweden
Period and Starting Date: 6 months, and starting date upon agreement.
