An important part of common definitions of ‘smart’ electric power grids is the remote use of a far greater number of sensors and controllable devices than previously, and potentially at greater speed. The basic instrumentation of traditional power systems uses relatively strong analogue signals, such as 110V or 5A signals from voltage transformers and current transformers. It is only reasonable that as larger numbers and more advanced forms of sensors and actuators are connected, over greater distances, the existing signals and additional ones will be carried by a more modern form of networking.

Existing methods from other fields such as industrial automation and internet should clearly be used where they are feasible, to avoid the costs and teething-troubles of developing a new method. The questions then arise, of what the the criteria are for smart-grid automation and sensing, and which existing buses would be suitable. There are many criteria to be taken into account: demands of latency and data rate, immunity to EM interference, data security, and strong and wide-based support from industry, etc.

The candidate should have some knowledge from the communications networks side of the subject, and preferably some from the power systems side too.
