VoIP solutions in Axis network cameras
Scope: 2 students completing 30 credits (20 weeks) each
VoIP once started as an alternative way to communicate between telephones and then spread into solutions for communication between computers adding also the possibilty of videoconferencing. During the years embedded systems has become more powerful and as of today VoIP solutions has been integrated into devices such as TV:s and mobile phones.
H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10/AVC for Advanced Video Coding) is one of the latest videocompression standards gaining popularity and is today one of the leading standards. H.264 is today used in e.g. digital videoplayers, mobile phones and in surveillance. In surveillance there is a high demand for resolution and 30/25 (NTSC/PAL) frames per second is standard, thus it has a high demand for bandwidth as well as for storage. The H.264 compresses digital video more than 80% and reduces bandwidth as well as storage without loosing much quality which makes it suitable for surveillance purposes.
H.264 is used in some of the available VoIP solutions today and also one of the formats supported in Axis network cameras.
The goal of this thesis is to theoretically investigate and compare different VoIP solutions with both video and audio in Axis network cameras. The thesis shall also include implementation of a VoIP prototype in an Axis network Camera.
Master student in computer sciences and engineering with a strong interest for network communication and programming in Linux/UNIX.
