Optimization of Enzymatic Process Step
Xylophane AB is a start-up company, which is developing a renewable barrier material for packaging. The material is a barrier to oxygen, grease and aroma and can be used to extend shelf life of oxygen sensitive, greasy and aromatic products. Today, materials such as the synthetic plastic EVOH and aluminium foil dominate the market. Recycling these materials, incorporated in a multilayer structure, is complicated. In addition, prices of crude oil and metals are expected to increase further in the future. Therefore, the packaging industry has a great interest in finding renewable, cost efficient and functional alternatives.
Xylophane AB’s barrier is based on the biopolymer xylan which can be extracted from agricultural and forest residuals. The process consists of three main steps: chemical treatment, membrane filtration and drying.
In the Xylophane extraction process enzymes can be used to achieve an acceptable end product quality. During this master thesis project, the use of a certain enzyme will be optimized. The thesis work will be divided into two parts:
1: Optimization of enzymatic process step in laboratory scale. Multivariate experimental design and data analysis will be used.
2: Verification of optimized parameter settings in pilot scale.
