FPS performance measurement method
Scope: 2 students completing 30 credits (20 weeks) each
An important requirement for network cameras is the amount of frames per second (fps) they can deliver. In many installations only products that can deliver full frame rate will be considered. It is therefore of high importance to have reliable methods for measuring the fps performance of network cameras.
Measuring the fps performance is problematic as the performance is affected by several factors, most importantly the complexity of the depicted scene and the type of video streams being delivered. Defining an appropriate scenario (scene and stream types) is difficult and measurements with a specific scenario will only give an answer for that scenario. A more dynamic approach that could find the limits in fps performance, i.e. the scenarios where full frame rate can no longer be achieved, would be very valuable.
Present a method for finding fps performance limits for network cameras. The main steps of the thesis will be:
- Finding suitable scenario parameters for measuring fps performance.
- Investigate other factors that might affect fps performance.
- Develop tools and techniques for measuring fps performance so that the limits for full frame rate performance can be found.
- Try the tools and techniques on Axis embedded network cameras.
