Master student project - Modelling hydrodynamic effects on drug dissolution and deaggregation of low soluble drug particles in the small intestine

This project is built on of a NSF funded research programme at Penn State University (Prof J Brasseur) under which computer models of transport and mixing in the small intestines are being developed. The on-going modelling effort will be extended in collaboration with AstraZeneca to quantify the local hydrodynamic environment experienced by small drug particles during mixing and transport in the human small intestines. The ultimate aim is to develop an in vivo relevant in vitro methods and/or empirical equations for use in software simulations of drug absorption capturing the intestinal hydrodynamics.


Your role and experience
You are master student and you have at least 3 years of completed university studies within, Chemical engineering, Chemistry, Physics or Pharmaceutics programmes.

Work at AstraZeneca
• Perform in vitro dissolution experiments using different experimental set-ups
• Making assays of drug content in solution by HPLC or other analythical chemsitry techniques
• Manufacture and characterise particle suspension to be used in dissolution experiments
• Theoretical analysis of study results
• Verbal and written reports of results
