Neuroprotective strategies for the treatment of the neurological complications of diabetes

In Europe, there are approximately 500,000 new cases of brain stroke each year. Diabetes is a major risk factor for stroke and efficacious treatments are largely lacking.
We have identified a receptor whose activation is important for the treatment of diabetes but it is also expressed by adult neural stem cells.

Aiming at developing a therapy anti-stroke, the goal of this project is to identify ligands specifically activating the identified receptor in vitro.

The project will involve the use of stem cells cultutes, Western blots analysis, and immunocytochemistry.

You will work in a highly motivated team and well-equipped laboratory at the Karolinska Institutet, Department of Clinical Science and Education, Unit for Diabetes Research (Head: Professor Åke Sjöholm) , Södersjukhuset.

A start date is planned for the beginning of January 2010.
